FINAL DAYS

Today is Thursday. Our final showcase is this Tuesday. We just received our rough draft running order. We are casting the 15 sketches now and most likely 2 will get cut. The 15 of us have 3 and a half days to bring our show to a tight 40 minutes for our dress rehearsal on Monday. We are prepared excited. Our teachers will not be involved in the final planning and it's all on us. Fighting will ensue but I think we'll all be alive by the end of this weekend. We also have four people turning/turned 21 this week meaning we have been drinking a bit too much. Well, wish us luck.

Dayton Flyers I will be seeing you all in Daytona (if you're cool) on the 12th! HOLLA!!!!!

Weekend Update

Hey friends! Hope you are having a nice weekend. The weather in Chicago has been a sky crying fest all week but it's nice out today. Good thing cause the Kearney 5 is in town this weekend. Rosco was sadly left home with the cousins. He was in my dream last night. We went on a walk.
Here's an article about the new Second City Main stage show. My professors say it's the best show in years and it's the first time two African Americans shared the stage together. Read it if you're interested. Second City Article Holla

Mhh what else is happening. Oh, this week we all had to do stand up and most of my friends did it for the first time. They were absolutely amazing. People here are talented as beep. We also had a final show for context class yesterday. Everybody was given a different top and then had to do a performance or video to express what we've learned. I had Animation and other examples: Mime, Musical Theater, Performance Art, Comic Strip, Music, Advertisement, yada yada yada yada.
I decided to make a stop animation video because I was already familiar with it annnddd I enjoy making them. The premise was the bizarre thoughts and feelings in my mind in the morning.

Random Facts

Hey friends! Thank you Dayton friends for helping me have yet another fantastic weekend. Sadly, I will not be returning to visit again until the Fall. BUTTTT Daytona anyone???

Enough about Dayton. I'm in the windy city and things are sure getting busy. We have our sketch show this Friday so my group "Molly's Hot Pants" (no idea why we agreed on this) are actually very well prepared and are finishing the final re-writes of our scenes for the show. Woohoo so interesting I know.

I started listening to Marc Maron's podcast called WTF tonight while I was shoveling my room clean. For those of you who don't know wtf WTF it's basically Maron interviewing famous comedians and comedy writers like Conan, Sarah Silverman, yada yada yada and they talk about mostly serious stuff and funny stuff too. It's interesting seeing the serious side of their funny brains and most of them are messed up.

I am embarrassed to admit I'm lovin' Twitter. I guess I'm getting really sick of the fbook routine and people write some funny stuff. Kid Cudi is always depressing and angry, the Kardashians just keep tweeting they're excited about something, Judd Apatow loves retweeting his obsessive fans, Perez Hilton just sucks up to Lady Gaga, OH and because it's midnight, celebrities and commoners alike will begin tweeting they are exhausted YET cannot sleep, AND this just in Daniel Tosh just asked his Twitter followers if anyone has ever died of diarrhea.

Good talk. Tomorrow I'll do a video or something?

Happy Tuesday!

Good Mornin'

Hey everybody! I'm in improv class this morning and decided to take a couple shots from my laptop. Here are the lookers themselves.

Really friendly and enthusiastic about a day of making fun of each other. Always a good time.
We hope you have a good day! Make fun of yourselves...or we will for you.

My friend said it was supposed to be 74 degrees out today. She lied. It's gross out. Here's a summer picture to keep you happy.

Work Time Work Time

It is Sunday.

I am actually stress free today because we have no immediate work due this week. HOWEVER, we DO have some crazy projects due in the next couple weeks. You probably don't care but I'm going to describe them for myself in order to achieve excellence. pah!

WRITING
Instead of bringing in the regular 5 page sketch ideas every Monday, we were split into groups of 7 and 8 are have two weeks to create a 15 minute sketch show. With this same group we also have to create a 15 video show. Sounds awesome and we're excited but the work starts tonight! My group is meeting at Second City in a few hours and we will be reading/rewriting/blocking the three rough draft sketches for tomorrow.

CONTEXT
This class we have a 5 minute final presentation due in two weeks. We each were assigned a creative topic and mine was Animation. I was happy to hear this because I was able to put my drawing/photo skills to use (although they are dusty). Before spring break we had to do a presentation explaining the process. Others had sound editing, puppetry, miming, speech, fashion, music, comic strips etc etc etc.
For the final pres. we have to use the skills instead of describe them.
SO I am making a photo montage with real people and then I'm going to incorporate paint yada yada yada. Enough talk, I'll just ahve to show you the finish product when the day comes.

HISTORY
History, history, history. Good times. This past week we've been watching Show of Shows, I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners. We have been learning how the Round Tables work and what happens when people work together to write a sketch. Our assignment due this Tuesday is to pitch an episode idea for either I Love Lucy of The Honeymooners. Uh oh, I have some work to do.

ACTING III
Ohhh acting. How I love and hate everything about you. This is the professor who challenged me to memorize every word, breath and laugh a stand-up routine. We decided on Lewis Black. I've been working on that for a week now sooo we'll see how it goes. As for our real homework...We've been reading a ton ton ton of Neil Simon plays because we all are assigned a scene from his collection. I was paired up with my friend Matt and we do a bickering lovey dovey scene from Star Spangled Girl. I prefer to call it Pretty Girl Swag. Anywayyy, we work on this for the next week or two then we will perform them in the De Maat Theater for our professors and classmates. Oh, did I mention I get to do a southern girl charm voice? Bahaha, so excited.

IMPROV
In the class of class we are focusing on our final showcase coming up in May. Our professor for improv is also the director of the final. We have been editing sketches and songs we have written in the past two months. We also just do exercises to keep us on our toes. No need to get too serious about this funny stuff.

MIND BODY SOUL CLASS
This class is awesome and I can't really desrcibe what we have been doing.... we do yoga, we turn into clowns, we dance, we stretch, we stand on each other, we cry for no reason, we create characters, we beat box, we play four sqaure, we argue and physically fight, we focus, we stare, we often laugh, we take our shoes off, we have no windows, we meditate, we have smelly ass feet. It's pretty fun I guess...

That's the bundle o' love. We're excited. Have a good day!

Had a dream I was with these wonderful people in this room. Weird I have a picture.

April Fools

Good afternoon everybody! I'm trying to keep you informed as I promised a few posts ago. Last night we had a grade school party in Old Town. If you know me at all I'm always down for a weird outfit for a night out on the town BUT things are little different here than back in Dayton. Soooo riding the CTA and the larger city jazz makes costume parties a little more risky. Yet satisfying. Anyway, I whore whoops i mean I wore an outfit similar to a past Halloween costume of mine. Coming from a little catholic school in irish catholic Cleveland, my rememberance of middle school is a little different from my Second City friends. haha here is my proof.

First, I will show you one of my costumes from 2 years ago and my level of maturity.

GRADE SCHOOL-BE YOURSELF DANCE 4/1/11
7:22 PM

Me and good friend Xan who shows me how to use my new walkman and how to be the "it" factor at the dance. Don't stare at her eyes or she'll curse you.

Below, is my "friend" (she would beat me up for saying that) Amy. She is from California and is cool. She threatens me with her cholo voice. She is known for dealing gum/candy/chuckie cheese tokens/etc to kids on the playground. She wears wife beaters even when it's snowing.

Below, it is obvious here that it has to be almost 9:00PM and my mom is picking me up shortly. There is an anxious look in my eyes because King and Queen are being announced momentarily.

Hopefully people will upload more pictures soon OR perhaps I was never able to find out the winner because my mom was outside waiting for me.

THE ROOF IS NOT ON FIRE

Jasper, Andy and I ( i guess Sky... kinda did) found a ladder a couple months ago on our back porch. We decided to climb it the other day and found an amazing view of Lincoln Park! When I took my first step onto the roof I literally felt like I have landed on the moon. When you look up all you see is the blue sky and tops of trees and buildings. Pretty cool (Miley Cyrus voice). We ate Subway on the roof and took some time to relax (from a hard day at funny school). I thought it would be a cool idea to take a timed picture of the three of us. Bad idea yo. It took many tries because I had to hurdle over a heater thing ( no, it was NOT close to the edge thanks for the concern). Basically I had to press the button and turn into Indiana Jones/Scarlet Takes a Tumble. FINALLY THE LORD ANSWERS. I made it in time! and threw up a victory sign with a face of accomplishment. Here it is! hahahah and some others...

SPRING?!?!?!?

Thank You

To my lacrosse team at UD.
I love you all so very much and miss you a ton ton ton ton!
I just got back from break to come home to a lovely card from you all:)
I have no words express to how happy it made me! I am so lucky to have had such amazing teammates/friends and you motivate me everyday to succeed. Just remember, even though I'm not your goalie with Lizzie anymore, doesn't mean the bruises you've given me are not within me as a person. Each bump on my shin is dedicated to you. Oh and don't worry because I get bruises on the improv stage when i get killed or have to jump off of invisible objects. Just don't complain when you come to my wedding and I'm wearing a onezzy where you can only see my face. Too far? Probably. I will be seeing you all soon! Thanks for everything.

Travel Time Ya'll

GOOD MORNING

Today is the day I travel home alone from CHI to CLE. I am going on a family vacation for my Grandparents 50th Wedding Anniversary. Clap clap clap! We are taking our grandparents to South Beach, then onto a cruise. I must say that a cruise with 25 family members is the perfect place to be when you need inspiration for comedy sketches. Whoop!

I am headed to the  Second City for Writing class from 9-1, lunch is 1-2 where babbling with funny people will take place. I'll slowly make my way to the stairs while making small cheesy side jokes to my friends.  As I walk down the stairs I will be a bit anxious because I have to travel on the El for an hour to the airport meaning I will be getting lost. NOT TO WORRY I have granola bars and gum to keep me satisfied with some jammin' music and good ole' brick breaker on my phone. (Thanks to my bestie Johnny Boy)

Sadly because I am going to be in the middle of the ocean I will not have internet service.... But I'll have a humorous pre cruise post and post cruise post. Have a great week everyone! The weather is b-e-a-utiful.

VIPER

This is my new friend Kimba. People call her VIPER. Let her know what you think.

WARNING: it may look like Molly Kearney.

Back To Work?

hello all! sorry for wearing the invisible cloak the past couple of days. On a sad note, one of the first and  Second Citians recently passed this week after a long and fulfilling life of 80 years. She worked beside the founders of SC. Her memorial is tomorrow and we were all invited to go. Some Second City graduates from years past will be speaking and our instructors said to beware of a few famous faces hitting the building. Uh oh, I already know that some of my new friends are going to scream bloody murder. I'll keep ya posted.

The snow storm was not as wild as it was said to be. But we did indeed get a ridiculous 6 day weekend. The comedy kids were all going crazy because the buses were not running tuesday and wednesday of last week. To pass the time we played games, ate food, drank a bit and practiced improv for class/life (so deep). There are quite a few friends who live close to us so we invited them over for dinner if they could get through the 4 feet snow drifts. Yeah, honestly nothing too interesting has happened this week.

I know it's only Monday but try not to look like this guy by the end of the week!
YOU'RE BETTER THAN THAT!

Claudia and Jane, See you guys in a week! MUHAHA! Hope you don't snore.

10 PM TUESDAY NIGHT

SNOW STORM PHASE 1

THE BEGINNING OF THE STORM

Last night six of us attempted to travel ten minutes south to Old Town on the RTA. The buses were supposedly running but after waiting at the stop for 20 minutes while inches of snow poured down on us we realized it was time to retreat home and start our own party. This is exactly what we did. Here is a weird shot of the street while the sky was falling.

SNOW STORM

Monday, January 31, 2011

The last three classes are just as wonderful as the first three soooo here they are.

Acting III: Sketch and Theatrical Comedy
Our professor for Acting has written a few Improv/acting books that we are encouraged to read. He reminds me of the comedian Lewis Black's character in the movie Accepted. If you have not seen it too bad cause I can't describe him any better. He swears like a sailor on drugs but is a very intelligent man. He is definitely NOT afraid to share his opinions. I'm liking him a lot.

Physical and Vocal Training for Comedy
Jet is our professor and she is the most hippie dippy person I've seen thus far in the theater world. She's a free spirit and has the yoga instructor mentality with added swear words for comfort. This classroom is similar to a dance studio with the mirrors and wooden floors. We did some crazy exercises and mind games aka you have to give up the fact of being a normal cool and start gettin' weird.  For one exercise we all laid on our backs with the lights off. Jet said to make a sound scape which meant everyone had to create their own noise or voice to create one flowing rhythmic beat as a class. Bizarre but very cool.

Writing Comic Scenes
This class is taught by a younger guy named Andy. He is really down to earth and is a disgustingly talented writer. Our first homework assignment was to write two monologues, one similar to ourselves and the other, opposite ourselves. Our class is four hours long and starts at 9 am which might a bit difficult but I'll keep ya posted YA'LL!

The 411

Overall, this week was a BLAST. The comedy studies group is getting along swimmingly and we've already seen the Second City Main Stage Show and ETC show and they were fantastic. The shows were both equally hilarious but one had more musical pieces than the other. My classes are going to be the bomb diggity.

Creating Scenes Through Improvisation
This class is taught by a man named Norm. He's in his forties and wears a long trench coat and crazy glasses. He's a straight to the point kind of guy and I already learn a crap ton from him. His improv exercises are all about getting inside of your character and the relationships with group.

History and Analysis of Modern Comedy
I never thought I would say this but I look forward to history class. First day of class we took a 59 question quiz all about the history of comedy going back to Charlie Chaplin to Lily Tomlin to Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy. My teacher for this class is also head of the program and was one of the members to start it. Anne has worked along side the greats of comedy and also wrote two books I previously read. Very down to earth lady.

Context for Comedy
In context for comedy we learn about satire and the first day of class we discussed The Colbert Report and The Daily Show. We had to list ten pet peeves we have in the world.

Examples from me and my classmates in no specific order:

  • Rock of Love
  • Billy Ray Cyrus
  • Black ice
  • Everybody Loves Raymond
  • Self check-outs
  • Jersey Shore
  • Bandwagon hoppers
  • Teen pregnancies
  • Stupid people
  • Sarah Palin
  • The fact that George Bush is not a comedian
  • People who are double jointed
  • TSA
  • Yellow lights
  • Mothers who let their babies cry really loud in Target
  • Velcro Shoes

After we shared our list of ten aloud to the class we had to choose the one that made us most angry and write about why for two minutes. After, two at a time went up on stage and started SCREAMING what we wrote down simultaneously to rest of the class. I hate self check-outs.

It. Was. Awesome.

Case of the Happy Mondays

Andy and Jasper excited my camera is out again.

Most likely discussing how lost we are.

Awesome sky I noticed while ignoring the fact we were lost.

Jasper.

Organized!!

It was a magical moment in time when the boys and I took our first steps onto The Second City grounds. We did miss our first bus but still arrived on time   early.  Great Success! Arriving to class was comfortable because we already know more than half the class. We met our new professors who have taught some reaally reallly cool people. We had an awkward 2 hour lunch and then had Improv Orientation.
Pleasant Tomorrows!

First Weekend

Taken by someone who didn't tell me to smile.
Orientation went wonderfully on Friday, minus the fact it was -17 out or something. We went to Columbia to get our ID pictures
yeah.... I wasn't ready. We finally met everyone in our program which was pretty intimidating but the roommates and I did well. We got there early and were dressed like adults (except we played hacky sack at the bus stop). The entire program (all 32 of us) ate lunch together and planned a party at someone's apartment in Lincoln Park.
Taken by Andy
It was a success and I believe some had too much fun. It consisted of loud shouting and right and wrong name guessing awarded with heavy high fives and led to ukulele playing and dancing. I felt perfectly at peace. It looks like we will now be partying in long skinny apartments with pretty wood floor and high ceilings. I feel chic. I am still directionally challenged in Chicago but I pat myself on the back for waking up in my own apartment each morning.

Colleen, Zan, Andy, Sarah and myself Friday night taken by Colleen.
This is the view out my bedroom window. Yesterday morning,  we went to a waffle place, which we thought would be good wholesome american style BUT it was some fancy pants waffle place that took euros and costed more than our apartment. We did leave quite full though. They also had pure melted chocolate shots which Andy decided to get a full glass of...
This is a shot I took last night at our new friends, Keebler and Taylor's place. Damn good time. Also, on the walk to this party I was crossing a busy street and ran into two people I worked with at Put-In-Bay. Weird.
Keebler & Taylors

First day of class FINALLY starts tomorrow (first time that statement was shared with excitement)! Tonight we are going to a show at the Improv Olympic and it's going to be very very very funny.
Everyone have a wonderful evening and we'll be talking soon!
Thanks for reading.

First Day Jazz.

This was my room the night before I left completely disorganized.
And yes those are penguins get over it.

Road trip partners in crime. Thank you for getting me there alive.

                                                                     Lots of leg room though.
Alright, so I arrived yesterday around 2:30 with the rentals and enjoyed a smooth, leisurely cruise straight through. It is now day two with the roommates and I thank my brothers, Brian and Sean for training me to live with wild animals. I joke I joke they're great and we already had a family dinner. I had applejack cereal with oj, obviously delicious. I also spent my first night in a UPS store with the boys waiting for Jasper's 6 boxes to arrive so he can stop wearing his cords and wolf (as in animal) crew neck {side note: he talked about it often and before seeing it for myself I just thought he couldn't say wool...} BUT the trip was a success and we drove through the city at night which was a bit different from Dayton.
When we arrived back to Lincoln Park we watched tv, I straightened their hair, played trivial pursuit (failed miserably Jasper hustled us)  and then laid in our beds attempting to get sleep for orientation (the radiators sounds like dying cats).

Schulyer, Jasper and Andy brought enough xbox games to build our own apartment but it's whateverrrr...hmmm.. oh and they watched Mean Girls before I got here which made me feel a bit uneasy but other than that they're the bomb.

This is home! Landlord Chuck is very kind and even put a live plant in my room! We'll see how long it survives : / We are on the top floor!

Surf Street

Panoramic shots of two corners of my room. I'll show you the finished project this weekend.  It's awesome

Very long, beautiful hallway and that's my room at the end, annnnd this is taken from the kitchen.

and the bathrooms in the main hallway.

Andy preparing hot coco in wine glasses. Stupid brilliant idea.

Haha... well this is Schuyler in his assigned seat in our family room.

Last but not least, Jasper unpacking his shiz after days of patiently awaiting their arrival.
